Retail Clothing Try-On
Via Mobile and Kiosk Augmented Reality
Overview
INDE’s retail product arm Vyu has created a mobile and kiosk-based system that allows users to explore virtual clothing configurations in real-time using augmented reality.
The challenge
Returns became the new normal when it comes to e-commerce: according to 2018 data free returns or exchanges are the number two reason what makes consumers more likely to shop online, but from a business perspective, returns can gut conversion rates, deplete margins and can even threaten the entire business. Brands are trying their best to provide as realistic expectations as they can to reduce exchange costs.
Most e-commerce sites that specialised in clothing and accessories are already offering multiple photos or videos displaying models wearing the garments to avoid false expectations in potential customers, but they can't be entirely size-inclusive.

Journey
Augmented reality’s unique affordances provide a new option in clothing visualisation. The Vyu development team has analysed consumer flows on various e-commerce sites, and have leveraged the features that already worked well, such as section configuration of the clothes. Augmented reality visualisation then adds a rich media, three-dimensional layer to those existing norms in clothing retail.
Vyu’s approach was different from most virtual try-on systems. Instead of forcing an overlay of the actual garments on the consumer which can often be cumbersome and visually restricted, Vyu’s systems have created an augmented reality visualisation that lets users create custom 3D mannequins based on the physicalities of their own bodies.
Users can set up a virtual avatar by entering their measurements, such as height, waist, or hips. Once they have set up the 3D mannequins, they can virtually try on the items they are considering to buy, using their own living room as a catwalk.
About VYU
Physical retail is evolving. Today’s digital consumers require immediacy, personalisation and customisation as standard in both their shopping and buying experience. Using Augmented Reality and Computer Vision technology, Vyu products are designed to incorporate the innovation and flexibility found in e-commerce into the physical retail space. Vyu products empower and inform brands and customers alike.
From real-time customer metrics to holographic store display via product recognition Vyu provides the framework to make physical spaces digital-ready.
