INDE Gets Recognized for Their Research & Development Activity by ACM SIGGRAPH

Published: July 3, 2019

UK Augmented Reality company INDE has been invited to participate in ACM SIGGRAPH for the second year in a row. Last year the team had the chance to exhibit in the AR / VR Village, and this year their peer-reviewed submission has been accepted to the SIGGRAPH'19 Poster program. Tamas Matuszka, Ph.D., INDE’s Director of Research & Development will represent the company and present their paper "HeroMirror Interactive: A Gesture Controlled Augmented Reality Gaming Experience" in Los Angeles in July 2019.

Interactivity plays a crucial role in Augmented Reality, and therefore an easy-to-use interaction method is necessary. The vast majority of these solutions rely on expensive additional hardware, such as Kinect or Real Sense, however, INDE's R&D team came up with a real-time gesture control method that relies on deep learning and uses only a conventional camera without any depth-sensing ability.

They chose their "Incredible Quiz with Alexander Hamilton" HeroMirror experience as a case study, which is located in Madame Tussauds, Washington DC. The hero of the kiosk-sized Augmented Reality-powered photo booth is the forefather himself, who tests the visitors' knowledge on history with a game show style quiz. The experience is controlled by pre-defined gestures: they can choose the right answers by lifting their left our right arm.

They have deployed a Kinect reference implementation as well to compare with their results, and there was no significant difference in terms of gesture recognition accuracy.

“SIGGRAPH is the leading conference in the field of computer graphics and interactive techniques with thousands of attendees including top researchers as well as big tech companies. This is a great opportunity for us to disseminate our R&D activity to the wider audience, to gain inspiration from academics and industry leaders and also may result in technical partnerships and future collaboration” commented Tamas Matuszka, Ph.D.

“INDE has always been very active in R&D” said Alex Alanson, COO “as its a necessary part of positioning yourselves as a market leader in a fast moving area of technology. The recognition that SIGGRAPH provides us with is another form of vindication of our efforts in this area.”
