HeroMirror Augmented Reality Experience for Celebrity Cruises
Overview
The partnership between Celebrity Cruises and INDE started with this unique AR photo booth to commemorate International Women's Day. The luxury cruise line embarked on a historic trip on March 8, 2020 with an all female bridge and officer team, and celebrated with this INDE HeroMirror that features a photo opportunity with Captain Kate McCue.
Some mainstream cruise lines already have set up green backdrop screens and offering photo montages with the crew members, but Celebrity Cruises chose a more innovative approach. They have partnered with full-service augmented reality company INDE to create immersive experiences that let passengers have a unique photo opportunity with the captains and the most popular crew members.
User Experience
Using INDE’s famous kiosk-sized AR platform, this experience offered passengers onboard the Celebrity Cruises expedition the unique opportunity to pose with the ship’s captain, Kate McCue, the first-ever American female to command a mega cruise ship. The touch-screen interface allows for easy user interactivity and creates a simple and intimate photo opportunity with the legendary captain that’s immediately shareable via email.
This particular HeroMirror didn’t just raise brand awareness for Celebrity Cruises or offer a supplemental revenue stream with the photo keepsakes, it also promoted internet services aboard the ship, due to guest desire to share the images immediately on social media.

Why it works
Although professional photographers are available on many cruise lines to capture truly one-of-a-kind moments, there is one photo-op that can almost never be fulfilled: it's nearly impossible to get a picture with the ship’s captain -- they are active 24 hours a day. Some mainstream lines have set up green screen backdrops to offer photo “montages” with crew members, but Celebrity Cruises have truly chosen a more contemporary and forward-thinking approach.
